Creative Direction Rooted in Family, Heritage & Place

Our story

Erica Johannessen is a luxury curator and creative director based in Bozeman, Montana. A fifth-generation Montanan with hands-on experience building homes from the ground up, she brings a deep appreciation for architecture, landscape, and the feeling of home.

After a decade in the software industry, Erica followed a long-held love of design—what began as a creative outlet has grown into a practice she finds deeply fulfilling. Her work spans furniture and art procurement, finish advisory, seasonal styling, and residence-wide composition—each project approached with care, clarity, and a commitment to thoughtful, beautiful living.

Family is central to Erica’s ethos. Her husband, David, grew up in the trades—painting and wallpapering homes and commercial spaces throughout the Gallatin valley and Yellowstone Club—instilling a shared respect for craftsmanship and the kind of quality you feel in the details. The name Opal & Iris Design Ko. is a tribute to both past and present: to their three children—Kohen (12yrs), Iris (7yrs), and Opal (2yrs)—and to Erica’s great-grandmothers, Opal and Iris—whose names carry forward a legacy of strength, beauty, and belonging.

Erica draws inspiration from Montana’s beautiful mountains and natural elements to craft interiors that are both elevated and inviting—spaces that honor the rhythms of family, the beauty of place, and the quiet luxury of coming home.

“Erica really understood our home, our pace, and our priorities from the very first conversation. Every detail—from the palette to the placement—felt intentional, effortless, and deeply personal. It’s not just beautiful. It’s ours, in the truest sense.”
